Amazon Home Services: How it Benefits Manufacturers

What is Amazon Home Services?

Amazon Home Services (AHS) is a service marketplace that allows assemblers, house cleaners, handymen, electricians and more, to sell professional services directly to Amazon customers within their specific geographic region. There are no startup fees, no monthly subscription fees, and no advertisement fees.

How it Works

Amazon charges 20% of the price of the professional service job* up to $1,000. Once the $1,000 threshold is broken, the fee drops to 15%. If the services are purchased as a subscription plan for recurring appointments the fee is 15%. While the AHS homepage claims it is “Invite Only”, there is a link for interested users to apply right below it (see here) .

There are two types of Home Service requests: offer-based jobs and claim-based jobs. Offer-based jobs are purchased by selecting a specific professional and submitting three appointment preferences. For these jobs, pros set the price estimate upfront. Pros receive these jobs via email and work with the customer to confirm a final appointment date and time.

Claim-based jobs are purchased by customers, but do not allow the customer to select a specific professional. Instead, Amazon surfaces a single price using localized price estimates - based on the range of competitive prices that providers offer for each service - and collects a single appointment preference from the customer. These jobs are then sent to all the pros offering that service within the customer’s ZIP code. Pros receive these jobs via notifications through the Selling Services on Amazon app or the Seller Central home page.

Who Can Use Amazon Home Services?

There are a couple requirements to sign up for Amazon Home Services. First, you need to have General Liability Insurance. All AHS providers are required to carry General Liability insurance with a limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence. You will be required to provide your insurance information upon registering on Amazon.com.

Secondly, if you are one of the following trade professions: Electrician, Plumber, HVAC Specialist, or General Contractor, you will be required to provide appropriate license/certification information required by applicable laws or regulations. If you do not meet the above requirements, you will not be approved to sell your services.

How to Sign Up

First, direct to the application here.

From there, enter a primary category and a secondary profession. Next, enter your business type, service type, company name, complete address, a third party review link (Yelp, Facebook, HomeAdvisor, etc.), full name, contact information and not whether or not you have General Liability Insurance.

From there, Amazon will contact you if they need any other information before approving your Amazon Home Services account. Once you have signed up and been approved, Amazon will pay you for the jobs you have completed on a 14-day cycle. There is no set time commitment to sell your services. You may walk away at any time.

Benefits for Manufacturers and Growing Online B2C Customer Base

Amazon Home Services offers customers add-ons such as installation and other services to go along with their purchases. Installations will be done by a registered professional and may be ideal for manufacturers or brand owners of complicated or difficult-to-assemble products. Partnering with AHS could be a great way to build and maintain contractor network while ensuring customer satisfaction.

While Amazon can be closed off about sharing customer information and allowing sellers to retrieve their customer information, Amazon Home Services uniquely allows business owners to contact customers directly and grow their business both on and off Amazon.

Before signing up, it’s in your best interest to research the competition in terms of pricing and specific offerings of your service in your area. Ensure your service offerings are profitable and worth your time before making the commitment.
